Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)

Definition

The name of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) refers to a group of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid. It is present in meat and dairy products from ruminants. In human medicine, the CLA, has expressed an interesting immunomodulatory effect.

Biological Role

To explain the immunomodulatory effect of CLA have been proposed various assumptions such as:

the alteration of eicosanoid’s signal (Fatty Acids of 20 carbon atoms such as prostaglandins)
modification of the serum levels of different antibodies and lymphocyte cytotoxicity
influence on the phagocytic capacity

Clinical Applications

It was shown that CLA inhibits mammary carcinogenesis in animals, while also reducing the metastasis of neoplastic cells.

Furthermore, it has been shown in vivo both in serum level, that CLA decreases the concentration of vascular epithelial growth factor of the breast tissue. In vitro, CLA has shown inhibitory action against the proliferation of cancer cells, inducing apoptosis.
