Docosahexaenoic Acid

Definition

DHA is a long chain fatty acid with 22 carbon atoms. It is present, with high concentration, in the cell membranes of the brain and retina.

Biological Role

The Docosahexaenoic Fatty Acid is essential for the growth and functional development of brain in young subjects, as well as for its correct functioning in adults. Its inclusion in feeding improves learning ability that, in case of shortage, is instead reduced. The brain shows specific affinity against the DHA, much higher than the one manifested with other Fatty Acids, requiring a very rapid turnover of this substance.

Clinical Applications

The intake of nutraceuticals rich in DHA stimulates visual acuity, as well as lead to a general improvement of health status. The decrease in the concentration of DHA in the brain is associated with cognitive decline, proper of advanced age and aging itself.

Epidemiological studies, in the human field, have shown a close correlation between fish consumption of oil rich in DHA, and the reduction of sudden death from myocardial infarction: a reduction of approximately 50% compared to a daily consumption of 250 mg of DHA. There are also clear indications that relate the DHA deficiency with depression.
